Play video on headless mainline with hardware acceleration

Hi,

I am running headless mainline jessie image on my cubietruck smoothly for some months now.

The only drawback is that i need from time to time to play some videos on the tv.

I have been waiting for hardware video acceleration in order to install mpv and play videos without GUI.

I have been looking at the sunxi mainline effort and I see that for kernel 4.8 they plan the display engine clocks (TCON, FE, DE).

As I am not a developer, it is not obvious to me (I have already googled it but no luck) if the display engine clocks are what we are waiting for hardware video acceleration on the mainline kernel.

Can someone please explain (this noob question) what are display engine clocks (TCON, FE, DE) and if hardware video acceleration on the mainline kernel is expected to work with kernel 4.8?

Thank you
